Lechoneria: Lechon Belly and Other Filipino Favorites

Today we feature a Filipino restaurant called Lechoneria at SM North. It offers a feast of Filipino dishes led by the flavorful lechon belly. The food generally satisfies, with some twists on the otherwise traditional food and drinks presentation.

Tonight’s dinner is a celebration of challenges and coming out of ’em victorious, of daily grind and relief from it, of sleepless nights and finally sleeping in. Good to step on those brakes, slow down, and have a break. Life is short, better enjoy it. 💗

Lechon Belly Wraps.

Lechon Belly Wraps. These would have been better if lechon skin’s crispiness was kept intact. But the layers of flavors from the tender meat and fat, and the skin (despite the lack of crunch) were immensely delightful.

Chicharon Bulaklak.

Chicharon Bulaklak. It is always a favorite of kids from any restaurant. The first bite was really good… but finishing a piece left a burnt after taste in the mouth. Must be the oil used. Sad that it didn’t live up to our expectation.

Crispy Baby Squid.

Crispy Baby Squid. I have always liked squid, be it grilled and stuffed, cooked adobo style with black ink sauce, or simply fried in batter. These crispy baby squids were such a good appetizer, not heavy despite the crunch extenders.

Laing.

Laing. I like the texture, not that liquidy and not dry either. It was a bit on the salty side though. The lechon belly topping gave it a nice twist. They should have skimped on the salt though, as the lechon belly flavor would have sufficed as seasoning.

Sinigang na Lechon Belly.

Sinigang na Lechon Belly. It was a bit on the salty side too… but good in warming the tummy. Again, it would have been better if the skin was crunchy still… but then, how can anyone do that?

Lechon Belly Tanglad.

Lechon Belly Tanglad. The star of the feast. The taste was fantastic, the layer of fat beneath the skin was glorious. If only crispiness was consistent on all chops. But still good…

Pansit Dagat.

Pansit Dagat. It was basically pansit palabok topped with seafood such as shrimp and squid. The taste was so-so though. This can be skipped.

Melon Melon Sinta and Lemon Iced Tea

Melon Melon Sinta and Lemon Iced Tea. Melon Melon Sinta was lovely to look at with 3 kinds of melon balls… but taste was ordinary… refreshing only because it was served ice cold. The lemon iced tea was more refreshing.

Coco Lychee Sherbet.

Coco Lychee Sherbet. This tasted really good with the right amount of sweetness. I have always loved the fruit flavor of lychees in fruit cocktails, or paired with almond jelly, and even in fruit teas with pearls and coconut jelly. Here, it perfectly blended with the coconut-flavored crushed ice. And the rice crispies (pinipig) added a more exciting crunchy twist to it. I think it is better served on a taller halo-halo glass though to avoid spillage.

Turon Napoleones.

Turon Napoleones. I like this Lechoneria’s take on the classic turon served a la mode. Despite the caramel drizzle on the the vanilla ice cream, and the sugary syrupy banana slices, its sweetness is not overwhelming, probably tempered by the fried wrapper layered between the sweetened banana slices. What an exciting and fun dessert to eat!

That’s all folks! Until next time. 💗
